Refugee and store manager

A refugee stands by a store
He begs for food
He begs for something to do
He begs for life
A life he imagined
But not true.

A store manager looks at him
He explores the refugee’s look
He marvels at the similarity in looks
He wonders what to do now
He wonders what would he do
If he was the mirror reflection he sees
The store manager looks at the refugee
And freezes.

Another country declares independence
From independent countries
And becomes abandoned
At risk of bandits
And dictatorship with a public mandate
After all people voted once before
To abandon voting
And risk losing
What makes us human
Freedom to be
And the patience to speak.
